Ready for me to rave about one of my favorite places on Long Island? Yes, I’m talking about the Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River. This arboretum is a year-round treasure, and displays the beauty of nature in all four season—from weeping cherry blossom trees to summer greens, to deep hues of autumn leaves and red holly bushes in the winter. But if you ask me, September might just be the best time to visit. Why? Because not only does it make for the perfect fall day on Long Island, but the Community Sponsored Agriculture (CSA) farm is in full bloom, and it’s home to the most stunning, gorgeous dahlias I’ve ever seen! These flowers are the gem of the arboretum this time of year, and trust me, they are not to be missed. And while everyone is already searching for fall things to do on Long Island, I think this activity is the perfect "end of summer" day to celebrate the changing seasons.
Plan Your Visit: Entry is $8 per car, but if you have an Empire Pass—it’s free! Make sure to stop by the newly installed visitor center. Not only is it the perfect spot to use the restrooms before embarking on your adventure, but you can also purchase fresh eggs, learn about the various trees around the arboretum, and explore interesting exhibits. It’s a nice way to start your day before diving into the rest of the arboretum.
Lunch at the Hidden Oak Café: First I recommend enjoying lunch before exploring the grounds. Enter the impressive mansion and make your way to the Hidden Oak Café, one of my favorite spots for a cozy meal. My go-to order is the curry chicken salad on a croissant—it’s delicious! And of course, no meal here is complete without indulging in one of their famous baked goods. I highly recommend a slice of the pistachio cake and a cup of cappuccino, but they also offer scones and other tempting desserts, along with tea. You can order a pot of tea and choose between any of the several flavors they have, and you may also have high tea here, but you must make a reservation at least 24 hours in advance.
While you're in the mansion, explore a few of the rooms downstairs which is always decorated and set up for the season. The upstairs might be open as well, where you’ll find a cute little gift shop.
Explore the Grounds: Once you’re refueled, it’s time to explore the breathtaking grounds. After leaving the mansion, follow the path down to the left and take the River Walk, where the Connetquot River accompanies you on your right. This peaceful trail leads you straight to Breezy Island, a picturesque spot where you’ll find Mrs. Cutting’s Tea House—an absolute dream location for afternoon tea. Keep walking, and you’ll end up at the CSA farm, the highlight of a September visit.
The Dahlia Garden: For the grand finale of your arboretum adventure, make your way to the CSA farm’s dahlia garden. This is the star attraction of the month, with endless rows of brilliant, colorful dahlias in full bloom. It’s a sight that will leave you speechless, and definitely a moment to pause, breathe, and appreciate the gifts of nature. Pictures can't do it justice, you have to see them in person, but here's a few for you to enjoy.
